The University of Richmond Museums announces the call for entries for The 2006 Harnett Biennial of American Prints. Open to all forms of prints, the exhibition is presented as a celebration of contemporary printmaking by artists from throughout the United States. The Biennial will be on view from March 17 to June 24, 2006, in the Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art, University Museums.
SCENE Metrospace presents an exhibition entitled Cir*cus/Car*ni*val opening November 18 running through January 8, 2006. This themed show will include a room of mosaic carousels, a circus parade, trapeze and freak show barker and ticket-taker, all mosaic and miniature of course by Ellen Stern. There will be huge paintings, films, photos, by Melanie Heinrich, Amanda Miller, other artists. It will have many rooms of things going on all at once: about carnivals and the "freaks" and rides and people who operate them.
Being here is about New Zealanders, Pacifica, our culture, quirkiness and love of the outdoors - particularly the coast. Artist Bryce Brown says, “I never had any intention to paint so much scenery into my work but when you live in New Zealand and are so constantly surrounded with such beauty, how can this be avoided?” Brown's new work reflects strongly on our personal experiences and integration with the New Zealand landscape. Cerulean blue. Burnt umber. Yellow ochre. Cadmium red. Chromium green. Titanium white. These are the vivid colors on most every artist‚s palette. But imagine not being able to see the colors with which you are painting. For Atlanta artist Allan Eddy, that is a reality. "Total blindness for life, that was the diagnosis from five eye doctors in May of 2000," said Allan. "Now, five years later, I have proved the doctors wrong.
